Failing With Purpose

Risk-taking and failure are two sides of the same coin. To experience rapid transformation we must take risks and, inevitably, there will be failure.

But there’s good failure and there’s bad failure.

If we fail taking a big risk, we can learn something. And if we have failed correctly, we can recover quickly. That’s a good failure.

On the other hand, if someone is going down a path, but fails to raise their hand when things get off track, that’s a bad failure. Often it results in an even bigger problem.

The blame lies with leadership.

Why didn’t that person raise their hand? Fear? Lack of trust? Leaders must create cultures where people feel comfortable taking risks and sometimes failing.

Failure can be a powerful tool, but only if we use it correctly.
